This style guide for content on Funny’s Funny will evolve over time. Please check back often.

Writing Style

We write in our own voice with informal language. Using contractions like “it’s” can make the text flow better and is encouraged. Contributions should be an opportunity for the writer’s voice to be heard. Content is meant to be interesting and entertaining, but we’re not telling jokes to the reader.

This site is thoughtful and respectful. Everything we write should be reasoned and, where possible, kind. It’s ok to be against something, or even passionately annoyed, but not to the point of focusing an attack on an individual.

This is not a reviews site, so there’ll be no star ratings. It’s not necessary to write about things we don’t like, unless, say, exploring the lessons learned from them constructively. We can, however, fangirl/boy/peep about things we really like.

Unless discussing the Funny’s Funny site itself, we write in the first person or third person. This post IS about the site, so this time, we can say “we”. Occasionally mentioning “you” is fine, but articles written with advice to readers should not be so opinionated as to be written as commands! As a lot of pieces are opinion pieces, writing them in the “I” voice is good too.

Presentation Style

Typos and grammatical errors happen, and will be weeded out as much as possible during editing. However, writers are expected to use tools like Grammarly if they need help with proof reading before submission.

Titles are to be written in APA Title Case. Deviations may be desirable for emphasis, but the tool at Capitalize My Title is the default formatter for titles.

Sentences should be short. Paragraphs should avoid being longer than three lines if possible too. This is web content, rendered on a variety of devices. Shorter is better.

Where an article has a clear structure, then headings ought to be introduced to guide the reader through it.

Large block quotes in longer articles can help call out interesting quotes from the text, or act as exaggerated statements part way through an article.

Web Content Must Haves

Every post needs a featured image for the front page. If the post contains an image, then this will be used automatically. If not, then one needs to be added or chosen. For YouTube videos, we need to import the preview thumbnail as the featured image. This is at https://img.youtube.com/vi/CODE/0.jpg where CODE is the numeric and letter based code in the video’s web address. So Gangnam Style has address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0 which means its thumbnail is https://img.youtube.com/vi/9bZkp7q19f0/0.jpg

Images must be relevant and within fair use – so we can use a promotional image from the thing we’re talking about, we can use images copied from Unsplash.com ideally with attribution, though without is fine. We also have access to a free image library from WordPress. Other images should be with permission or should be clearly royalty free.

Links are very important – where possible link to other posts within the site. Definitely add links to any further reading off site.

Duplicated content needs handling carefully – it’s ok for a writer to replicate a post made on their own personal blog. If so, there should be a clear link between the two posts so that neither site looks like they’re acting as spam.

Stuffing is bad stuff. Very repetitive posts which mention the same words over and over again can be treated by search engines as though they’re keyword stuffing. We try to avoid repeating ourselves anyway, but using more pronouns can help avoid falling foul of this too.
